A desperate rescue attempt on Ohio’s Scioto River ended in tragedy Sunday when five people drowned after jumping in to help one struggling swimmer. The incident unfolded in the Columbus suburb of Powell in Delaware County, authorities said.
Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer said the group had gathered along the river when one person entered the water to swim and began struggling. Several others went in to assist, but they too encountered difficulties in the current. A motorist spotted a frightened child from the group running along a nearby road and called 911.
Rescue crews recovered two women Sunday night who were pronounced dead at a hospital. The bodies of three men were found Monday, according to a spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department. Two children under age 10, including the one who sought help, have been placed with family services.

The sheriff emphasized water safety, reminding people to know their swimming ability, have a plan, and wear life jackets. The Scioto River in that area can have varying depths and strong currents, especially near the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir.
This heartbreaking event comes just days after another water-related tragedy in Utah, serving as a sobering reminder of the dangers rivers and open water can present, even during what seems like a routine outing. No foul play is suspected, and authorities continue notifying family members.
The community in Powell and surrounding areas is mourning the loss as investigations into the exact circumstances continue. Officials urge caution near waterways, particularly with children present.
