The Lake Hubbard Power Plant is getting a major new piece of equipment Friday, and drivers on the east side of the metroplex will likely notice it during their morning commute.

"This is a transformer that started in Victoria, Texas...made it Forney, and is now going to end up at the power plant here in Sunnyvale," Sunnyvale police Chief Bill Vegas said.

The transformer is a massive piece of equipment, and moving it is a complicated task.

"It's at least two full lanes wide. It's almost three stories tall," Vegas said. "They're having to take some special precautions. They have an advance team that has to dismantle street lights, traffic signals and guard rails to allow safe passage for this."

The caravan with the transformer started Friday's journey in Forney at 7 a.m. and headed west on Highway 80. They'll likely exit at Pinson Road to avoid a low bridge, then get back on the highway at Clements Drive. they could Highway 80 at Collins Road in Sunnyvale to take the service road, but that's not guaranteed.

To get to the power plant in Sunnyvale, the caravan will need to go north on Belt Line Road in Mesquite. The caravan will eventually get on I-30 eastbound. They will then exit at Bobtown Road and take Barnes Bridge Road to the power plant.

"What we would like to do is alert the morning commuters to leave a little bit earlier, or understand that there's going to be some significant traffic with this," Vegas said.
