Transgender student sports bill stopped in Texas House

It appears a Texas bill that would ban transgender Texas students from playing sports on the team that matches their identity may be going nowhere.

Senate Bill 29 failed to advance out of the House Public Education committee, which is comprised of six Democrats and seven Republicans.

Zeph Capo is president of the Texas American Federation of Teachers and says, good riddance. "All of our children, every single student no matter their background, differences, they all deserve our respect and they deserve to be treated equitably and fairly in our public school system."

He says SB 29 would harm the most vulnerable students in Texas schools and says "it's shameful that they would pick on some of the most targeted and vulnerable students that we have in our schools.  There really isn't a problem.  This hasn't been a problem for anyone.  They are making it in to one and that's unfortunate."

While the Senate has advances a few bills that some say would harm trangender children, this was the first to get a committee vote in the House.

Capo says "I hope it's dead.  My concern is those that are hell-bent on using kids as their pawns are going to try to find a way to resurrect this bill and we simply can't let that happen"

Last week the House passed a bill that would ban gender confirmation health care for children.  That measure has yet to reach the full House floor.
