President Trump on Monday renewed his call for New Mexico to change its name to “New America,” saying the move would add prestige and raise home values and incomes.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that New Mexico “should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” He added that the new name “would add great value and prestige to the State” and claimed, without providing evidence, that “Home Values and Incomes would rise.” He also repeated past assertions about the state’s elections, writing that “Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!”
The post came shortly before Trump left the White House for a midterm campaign rally in Kansas, according to CNN. It is the latest in a series of suggestions from the president about renaming geographic locations. In September, he shared a map of New Mexico with the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.” The White House account reposted the image on X. Trump has also used executive orders to direct federal agencies to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario as Lake America.

Trump has no authority to rename a state. New Mexico’s name is established in its state constitution, and any change would require action by the New Mexico Legislature and voters. State Democratic leaders rejected the idea when Trump first floated it last month. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said at the time that the name “isn’t up for debate” and predates the United States.
New Mexico is a Democratic-leaning state that Trump lost by about 6 points in 2024. The president’s latest post comes as early voting is underway nationwide ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
No formal proposal to rename the state has been introduced in New Mexico, and state officials have not issued a new response to Monday’s post.
