Two cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 have been confirmed in North Texas.
It confirms speculation that the rapidly-spreading variant, first discovered in South Africa last month, was already in the area.
The cases were confirmed at Ayass Bioscience Lab in Frisco through Next Generation Sequencing on Wednesday.
"Since Omicron started to be a new threat, we decided to go ahead and sequence the positive test results from patients," Dr. Mohammad Ayass, CEO Ayass Bioscience Lab told KRLD.
Ayass says both cases are in adult men with no recent travel history.
Both had been fully vaccinated, but neither had a booster. One was experiencing mild symptoms, and the other was asymptomatic.
One man with the new variant is from Collin County, and the other lives in Tarrant County.
