Two people are facing charges after investigators find more than 160 cats, most of them dead, trapped inside a Johnson County home.

Alvarado police say the conditions around the home were so severe that investigators needed specialized protective equipment to enter the residence, document the scene and remove the animals.

Reports say crews found at least 86 dead cats, along with several other deceased animals. They also rescued 77 living cats and six dogs.

Lisa Griggs and Michael Morton are both now faceing animal-cruelty charges.

The surviving animals were taken to Alvarado Animal Control, where Operation Kindness and Tri-City Rescue are helping with medical care and shelter space.

Police say the investigation remains active.
