ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - Two high school students in Arlington are arrested after allegedly bringing guns to school this morning.
The incident happened at Bowie High School at around 8:00 a.m.
"There were two backpacks," says Tim Ciesco, Arlington Police spokesman. "Each backpack had a gun, and one of the backpacks also had some marijuana in it. The students were not with the backpacks at the time, we did have to go locate the students once the discovery was made."
Officers tracked down Machai Kelley, 17, and a juvenile boy.
Both were arrested and are charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place; Kelley is also charged with possession of marijuana in a drug free zone.
Ciesco says a teacher searched the backpacks after believing that there was something illegal inside them.
"They had done what's called an administrative search there," Ciesco says. "There's certain protocols that they have, where they have the ability to look through a student's backpacks (if they have) reason to believe that there might be something illegal in there."
Ciesco says officers also recovered ammunition; it's unclear whether that ammunition was loaded inside the guns at the time.
No one was hurt during the incident.
