Uber is launching its first autonomous ride service in Dallas today, partnering with self-driving technology company Avride to deploy robotaxis across a nine-square-mile area from downtown to uptown.
The service begins with trained onboard specialists riding in each vehicle to monitor the system and take control if necessary, a common step in early autonomous deployments.
Uber and Avride say the phased rollout will expand over time as the company gathers data, evaluates performance, and determines when the cars can safely operate without human supervision.
Dallas becomes one of the few major U.S. cities testing autonomous rides at street level, joining markets like Phoenix and Las Vegas as companies push toward wider commercial use of driverless technology.
