
Nearly 80 years after he died, a World War II pilot from Dallas will be laid to rest in east Texas.
Arrangements are being made for the remains of Army Air Corps 2nd Lieutenant David Lewis to be buried In Hopkins County, about 100 miles east of Dallas.
In 1943, when Lewis was 21, he was co-pilot of a B-24 Liberator which was one of thousands of aircraft sent to bomb oil fields in Romania to deny the Germans the petroleum they needed. Lewis's plane was shot down and the crew of ten was killed.
His body was not identified and his remains were buried in Romania, and later re-interred in Belgium.
The remains were unidentified for decades but recent advances in DNA technology allowed technicians to prove they are those of Lieutenant Lewis.
The remains will be returned to Texas for burial at Old Saltillo Cemetery in Hopkins County.
