While Thanksgiving travel is our focus right now, the Christmas break travel period is right around the corner and two potential airline strikes are looming on the horizon.

Both American Airlines flight attendants and Southwest Airlines pilots are locked in dragged-out contract talks and both unions are reportedly losing patience.

Monday, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants petitioned the National Mediation Board to declare negotiations at a deadlock which would start the clock on a 30-day federal cooling-off period after which the flight attendants could get permission to strike.

The flight attendants negotiators say they are frustrated with what they perceive to be the lack of progress in talks over a new contract.

Officials at American dispute that negotiations are stalemated. An airline statement says it's been offering the union what American calls "an industry-leading economic proposal."

At the same time, the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association says it will also ask for the right to strike if they don't have a deal hammered out in the next few days.
