Big news for North Texas as UNT Dallas is getting a massive $10 million grant to build a police academy.

Communities Foundation of Texas giving a grant to UNT Dallas for its Law Enforcement Training Center. UNT Dallas officials say the $10 million is the biggest grant in school history and will be used for the design and construction of the police academy.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia is thrilled since the Dallas Police Department has been using a temporary training center since 1990 and the number of officers has tripled since then.

Garcia says the training center at UNT Dallas will have a bigger gym, newer technology, and more communal space for recruits to work and train together.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson says the improved academy will be a “beacon of progress, transformation & unity.” He says it’ll host training for new Dallas police officers and other departments in the region.

Johnson says police academy at UNT Dallas should open in 2027.
