One of Sunday's three fatal shooting victims in Austin has been identified by friends and coaches as an Elgin High School student who had committed to play football for the University of North Texas.
The Denton Record-Chronicle confirms Willie Simmons signed a letter of intent to play for the Mean Green. Simmons agreed to accept a scholarship offer last April and signed during the early signing period in December.
Last night, as word spread, Simmons' future coaches and team-mates took to social media to express their grief.
UNT Recruiting Operations Co-ordinater Mackenzie Morris tweets that Simmons is "one of the greatest kids I've have the honor of knowing."
UNT's Football Chief of Staff Luke Walerius tweets he is "praying for the Simmons', Elgin community, and all of those Willie affected with his bright smile, infectious personality, and larger than life heart."
