Poll: Unvaccinated Texans more likely to behave as if there's no pandemic

Austin (1080 KRLD) - There's been a spike in the number of Texans not taking precautions against Covid-19.

The University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll finds Texans are returning to the "old normal" faster and faster.

Jim Henson, director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin says when polled in April, 33% of Texans say they are living their lives unmasked and sans social distancing, and that's up from 24% in March. "A good example, we asked people whether you think it's safe or unsafe to go to a bar or club. 56% of people that were vaccine-hesitant said they thought it was safe. Only 27% of people that were already vaccinated said that they thought it was safe."

The poll was taken before the CDC's new guidelines that say fully vaccinated individuals can ditch them masks in most settings.

Republicans who don't want the vaccine make up 45% of those living normally. Another 28% are vaccinated Republicans. Henson says that means nearly 75% of people living without restrictions and have not had a Covid shot are Republican voters.
