As many as 30 guns have been found on local campuses in DFW this school year thanks to trained search dogs, according to a report from our media partner NBC 5.
The company H1 K9, a private company that uses dog handlers to conduct campus searches, told NBC5 about the success they've had this year.
With the help of the search dogs, the company has found up to 30 guns and made around 1500 drug seizures in schools throughout the Metroplex.
"Our biggest fears are fentanyl and firearms," said Josh Ellis, owner of H1 K9 Consultants.
"Those are the two biggest things, even as a handler."
Garland ISD has been using the company to conduct searches on campus every day for the past few years.
Mark Quinn, director of security with Garland ISD told NBC 5, "A kid can't learn when they're looking over their shoulder, that's our motto,"
"So we wanted to add the K9 program, it's just another tool in our toolbox."
The team of canine searchers says they hope their work plays some part in making campuses more secure.
"You know every time we take a gun out of a school, it's a good feeling that we did something great that day," Ellis said.
"That maybe we saved a life that day."
