UT Southwestern researchers predict more COVID-19 hospitalizations

The latest models developed by researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center point to a growing number of people being hospitalized for treatment of COVID-19 in north Texas.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are at an all-time high in the region, having recently surpassed the previous peak level recorded in late July of 2020.

The forecast indicates a likely 40 percent increase in hospitalizations in Dallas County over the next week along with a 30 percent increase in Tarrant County.

The researchers also predict that an increasing number of COVID-19 patients will wind up in the Intensive Care Units of local hospitals.

They conclude that the current increase is likely due to indoor gatherings over the Christmas holiday and note that the impact of New Year's Eve parties will not be felt for another week.
