A Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy was killed and a Canton police officer was injured in a shootout while officers were trying to serve felony warrants Tuesday night.
The shooting happened around 10 p.m. at a home along State Highway 198, just south of Canton.
Authorities say the suspect was wanted on warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault of a peace officer.
About 10:22 p.m., officers reported shots coming from inside the home. Law enforcement returned fire, and both the deputy and the police officer were wounded.
The deputy died from those injuries. The Canton officer was taken to a hospital. Officials have not released the officer’s condition.
