Vice President JD Vance canceled a planned Friday trip to St. Cloud, Minnesota, at the last minute, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota. The cancellation was confirmed Thursday evening after the White House had announced earlier that day that Vance would appear for an announcement related to the administration’s efforts against fraud.
Vance, who chairs a White House task force on fraud, had been scheduled to join members of that task force for a news conference in St. Cloud. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the press conference would still take place Friday with a revised lineup of speakers, though it provided no reason for Vance’s absence. White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The change comes as President Donald Trump also canceled planned weekend campaign rallies in Kansas and Iowa. Trump told reporters he did not feel he needed to travel to Kansas, where Republican Sen. Roger Marshall is in a competitive race, saying the candidate was doing well. The Republican National Committee later confirmed the Iowa cancellation as well.
Instead of the in-person stops in Salina, Kansas, on Saturday and Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, Trump is shifting to a series of tele-rallies by phone in nearly 20 states in the final days before the November 3 midterm elections.
The RNC described the approach as a way to reach more voters in a limited time. Trump is still scheduled to hold an in-person rally Friday in Daytona Beach, Florida.
