A suspected car thief is locked up after being caught by Fort Worth and Lake Worth police Tuesday -- with a little help from a fisherman.

The whole thing began when a man stole a gun from Atwood's Ranch & Home on Lake Worth Boulevard. Then he stole a car which had police all over Tarrant County looking for him.

The car was spotted about two-and-a-half miles away at Marina Park on the east side of Lake Worth. Officers saw their wanted man near the lake -- and he saw them. So he took off and jumped in the water and tried to swim off. But he apparently can't swim very well because almost immediately he began struggling in the water.

The police didn't have a boat handy but fortunately -- for the car thief -- a man was fishing just off shore and he offered to take officers aboard and then navigated near the man flailing in the water.

The suspect grabbed on to the side of the boat and the fisherman slowly trolled toward the dock where several police officers were waiting.

The man didn't offer much resistance as they hauled him out of the water by the seat of his britches, rolled him over face down on the dock and slapped the handcuffs on him.

He's now safe and dry -- in a jail cell.
