Back in September, a fire was set at Maudrie M. Walton Elementary School in Fort Worth during a burglary.
The fire destroyed everything in the school's library, devastating students and staff upon their return to the school from a period of virtual learning.
When member of the Junior League Fort Worth found out from the district that it would take time to replace all that was lost, they jumped into action. President of the Junior League Amber Robertson said, "We felt like it couldn't wait. We wanted to hurry up as get as many books in these kids hands as we can."
So, the organization launched a virtual book drive called "Clear the List to Fill the Shelves," which is a wish list on Amazon of a variety of books ranging from those for pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Robertson said, "There are over 600 titles on the wish list. We just want every kid in that school to be able to have a selection of books."
The drive is currently ongoing on Amazon, with all books purchased sent directly to the school. Robertson said, "Getting books into elementary kids' hands is the key to creating a lifelong desire for learning. It opens the doors to worlds they didn't know about. It is so, so important. Literacy is huge, and we just hope everybody will participate and get books into these kids' hands."
