A Texas state senator is proposing a resolution to let voters decide whether the state should allow casinos.

State Sen. Nathan Johnson (D-Dallas), has filed a resolution that would place the issue on the ballot, giving Texans the opportunity to weigh in on the matter.

Johnson acknowledged that the state legislature has historically opposed casino gambling, but he argued that many Texans are already gambling in neighboring states such as Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. He suggested that allowing casinos in Texas would keep that revenue within the state.

Johnson also pointed out that the Texas Constitution’s prohibition on gambling, enacted 150 years ago, may no longer reflect current public sentiment or economic realities.
