Waco-based Brazos Electric Power CoOp files for bankruptcy protection

Just weeks after the historic Texas winter storm, Waco-based Brazos Electric Power CoOp, the largest generation and transmission provider in Texas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection overnight.

Brazos Electric is one of dozens of electricity providers facing charges stemming from a severe cold snap last month.

Unusually cold temperatures knocked out nearly half of the state's power plants, leaving more than 4 million people without heat or light for days.

Brazos and other companies that committed to provide power to the grid, and could not, were required to buy replacement power at unusually high rates.

Brazos Electric serves customers from the Texas panhandle down to the Houston area. It was founded in 1941.
