Senator John Cornyn of Texas spoke Tuesday during the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting before voting to advance the nomination of Todd Blanche to be the next Attorney General.

Sen. Cornyn says he along with fellow Republican Thom Tillis could not support the nomination if an original settlement stemming from a lawsuit filed by the president against the IRS was not significantly changed.

"The settlement documents also created a roughly $1.8-billion weaponization fund," Cornyn said. "That is no longer a part of the settlement."

With the anti-weaponization fund now gone in writing, Cornyn says he could support the nomination.

"President Trump needs someone in this role, as well, with a strong legal mind, but who also is close enough to him to give him confidential legal advice, to tell him hard truths," Sen. Cornyn said.

Cornyn added that Blanche should not be afraid to capitalize on the earned trust when necessary for the good of the country.

Blanche's nomination is expected to be considered by the full Senate later this week.
