A water main break caused some icy driving in downtown Dallas early Tuesday morning.

Overnight, officials say a water main ruptured along the westbound side of Woodall Rodgers Freeway near Routh, flooding a stretch of the service road to Pearl Street.

With temperatures in the teens, the water froze instantly into a sheet of ice forcing Dallas police to close down the service road. Also closed for a time was the westbound exit to Pearl Street.

Dallas Water Utilities crews worked on the rupture for several hours and had the water shut off by about 7 a.m. But the damage was done and the pavement remained icy for hours. Trucks were sent in to lay down sand to improve traction.
