CONROE , TX (1080 KRLD)- An 11-year-old boy is dead and authorities believe it could be as a result of hypothermia. Low winter temperatures and power outages had affected his family's mobile home in Conroe, Texas.
According to the boy's family, Cristian Pavon was known for sleeping in and his family didn't think much of it when they decided to check on him while he slept under a pile of blankets around 2 p.m. Tuesday, LMTOnline reports.
The boy was unresponsive. Though the family contacted 911 immediately and first responders attempted CPR, it was too late.
Authorities are now investigating whether the otherwise healthy boy died of hypothermia as a result of the family's home losing power over the weekend. Temperatures in Conroe dipped to single digits earlier in the week.
"He was OK," his mother, Maria Elisa Pineda told Univision. "I never imagined this could happen. We think it was because of the cold because he was doing well. He had dinner, played and he went to bed."
At least 30 deaths have occurred in Texas as a result of the continuous power outages exposing residents to dangerously low temperatures.
Hypothermia is only one factor as others have died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning after turning to unsafe measures to keep warm such as BBQ grills, stoves and vehicles inside garages.
