A 12-year-old boy and two teenagers are accused of beating a 70-year-old man to death during a carjacking in December, according to Philadelphia police.
The three young suspects allegedly knocked Chung Yan Chin to the ground, and punched and kicked him before stealing his vehicle at around 7 p.m. on Dec. 2 on the 3000 block of Teesdale Street, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Chin suffered facial fractures and a brain injury, and was taken immediately to the hospital, according to court documents. He died of his injuries on Dec. 21.
John Nusslein, 18, of Northeast Philadelphia, was arrested on Jan. 14 in connection with the killing. There is a current arrest warrant out for the third suspect, Qiyam Muhammad, 16, who remains at large.
The 12-year-old boy, who is not being identified because of his age, was taken into custody on Feb. 3, according to NBC News.
Nusslein and the 12-year-old boy have been charged with murder, robbery, conspiracy, and weapons violations.
The Inquirer reported that both are being held without bail, and attorneys for them didn’t respond to requests for comment.
A preliminary hearing for the 12-year-old is scheduled for next week, while Nusslein will appear in court again in April.
There was more than 800 carjackings in Philadelphia in 2021, according to police statistics cited by The Inquirer. That number is double the amount of carjackings in the city in 2020.
Philadelphia police data shows that there have been 71 homicides so far in 2022, matching the same number at this time from 2021. Homicide number have been increasing over the past four years, as there were just 34 killings at this time in 2018. The yearly number of homicides has increased every year since 2013, when it was just 246, compared to a total of 562 homicides in 2021.
