A recent poll meant to examine the use of social media among adults and different demographics has found that older Americans prefer one social media platform more than any other.

The Pew Research Survey noted that the most popular social media platform among adults was YouTube, with 83% of respondents sharing that they use the platform.

The next closest was Facebook at 68%, Instagram at 47%, Pinterest at 35%, TikTok at 33%, and LinkedIn at 30%.

The survey found that TikTok use among adults has grown significantly since 2021, jumping more than 10% from when the poll was run that year.

Other trends included Facebook dropping slightly over the last two years, while YouTube continued to climb high as the number one most used platform.

Of course, social media use greatly depends on generation, with Instagram being the most popular among those ages 18 to 29 (78%), while only 15% of those ages 65 and older use the site.

The same goes for Snapchat, as just 4% of the oldest Americans use the platform, compared to 65% of adults under 30.

Sixty-two percent of 18- to 29-year-olds say they use TikTok, the largest demographic to use the controversial site.

But while usage of certain social media platforms has grown slower than others in recent years, they all continue to see one trend: growth.

Jeffrey Gottfried, the associate director of research at Pew, was the main author of their most recent report on American social media use. He shared with NBC News that the sites examined “had more modest or no growth” at all.”

“When we look at the entire social media landscape, we do see a story of stability across the various sites,” Gottfried said. “What we do see here with that stability is that there is no indication that any of them have decreased.”

The survey was conducted from May 19 to Sept. 5, 2023, and included the responses of almost 6,000 US adults.
