Biggest spreaders of COVID-19 are not those getting vaccinated

The people who spread COVID-19 the most are not yet getting vaccinated against the virus.

Dr. Paul Klotman, president and CEO of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston says the pandemic's biggest drivers are people between the ages of 20 to 49 and studies show they account for 72% of the spread.

He says the strategy is to vaccinate people at high risk. "I think we should have a national discussion on whether we should focus on 25 to 50 year olds. Right now we're vaccinating 85, 80, 75, 65 year olds. That's the way Israel did it but Israel is a small country. A lot of people in our country are in a different age group."

He says that ignores the spreaders.  "Maybe our strategy ought to be vaccinating people between the ages of 20 to 49 because they're the ones responsible for infecting everyone.  They are also the ones out in the community, traveling, working and spreading virus."

He says the group between infant to age nine accounts for only three percent of all spread, and those between 10 and 19 seven percent.

Klotman says our vaccination plan must be accelerated, especially with new and perhaps more contagious variants showing up.
