Global cancer deaths among men projected to surge 94% by 2050, study finds

Cancer cases and deaths among men are expected to surge by 2050, particularly in those aged 65 and older, according to a new study.

Cancer cases and deaths among men are expected to surge by 2050, particularly in those aged 65 and older, according to a new study.

Published in the journal *Cancer*, the study reveals that the already significant disparity in cancer mortality and cases among men is likely to widen without effective interventions.

From 2022 to 2050, cancer cases in men are projected to jump by 84%, rising from 10.3 million to 19 million. Deaths are expected to increase by 94%, from 5.4 million to 10.5 million, with a 117% surge in men aged 65 and older.

Cancer cases and deaths are also projected to rise by nearly 40% among working-age groups and by 50% in countries with lower incomes and life expectancies.

In 2020, the global age-adjusted cancer mortality rate was 43% higher among men than women, and the incidence rate was 19% higher among men.

Men face higher risk factors leading to more cancer cases and lower survival rates, many of which are modifiable. Men are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, and be exposed to workplace carcinogens.

These disparities may also stem from men’s lower participation in cancer prevention activities and their underuse of available prevention, screening, and treatment options.
