CDC launches expanded national health database

A new project led by the Centers for Disease Control gives Americans unprecedented access to health information in their local communities.

PLACES (Population Level Analysis and Community Estimates) provides data estimates for 27 key health measures at four U.S. geographic levels: counties, incorporated and census-designated places, census tracts and individual zip codes.

Users can find information on local health challenges and priority health risk behaviors where they live. And, for the first time, the expanded PLACES project includes a wide variety of previously unavailable health data for all smaller cities and rural areas in the U.S.

PLACES is a partnership with the CDC, the CDC Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The CDC's Dr. Karen Hacker discussed the benefits of the expanded database with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
