Every year, the Annenberg Center puts out its civics survey to commemorate Constitution Day on September 17th. They want to know what we know about the basics of American government.
This year, it finds two-thirds of Americans know the three branches of government.... legislative, executive, and judicial. That's good.
Do you know what is guaranteed through the First Amendment to the Constitution? 3/4 know that freedom of speech is there. Less than 40% know that freedom of religion. Less than 30% know Freedom of the Press. That's only slightly higher than the right to assemble.
Only 11% know the right to petition the government. Twice as many think the right to bear arms is in the First Amendment.
