It's that time of year when dandelions start popping up, but state conservation officials say you would leave the weeds alone.

According to the PA Department of Natural Resources, dandelions are an essential food source for pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Hummingbirds use them for nests; insects for shelter; and chipmunks, and even bears, like to munch on them.

NewsRadio KDKA's organic gardening host Doug Oster says if the dandelions bother you, be patient, they go away on their own in 3-4 weeks.

“The flower will go away but then you’ll have the foliage there, they kind of have staggered bloom and there’s actually different varieties of wild dandelions,” said Oster.

Dandelions are also good for human consumption.

“They pair really well with red sauces, balsamic vinegar, and I love them on pizza,” said Oster.

And he urges homeowners not to use chemicals to get rid of them.
