A Florida doctor who’s been placed on probation because he began a colonoscopy on a patient who wasn’t fully sedated says he couldn’t hear the person’s screams because he’d failed to wear his hearing aids that day.
Dr. Ishwari Prasad has also been fined $7,500 and restricted from performing gastroenterology procedures in connection with two incidents that occurred at a surgery center in Tampa in June 2023, according to the state Health Department. In the other incident, Prasad is accused of allowing a tech who isn’t a licensed doctor to perform part of a colonoscopy, the department alleges.
In the first instance, Prasad is accused of continuing to perform the colonoscopy in spite of the patient’s screams, the Health Department reports. He claims he didn’t hear the patient – or his staff’s objections to the procedure – because he’d forgotten to wear his hearing aids that day.
