A 12-year-old Florida girl is in critical condition after she was run over by her mother on the first day of school.

The incident happened Monday morning in the drop-off lane at Sarasota's Booker Middle School, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The unidentified mom reportedly let her daughter out of her SUV, after which the girl dropped her bag under the vehicle.

When she reached down to pick it up, her mom stepped on the gas – and ran the girl over, authorities say.

The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, the FHP reports. No further information has been released.
