The news was everywhere last night that police had detained a deliveryman in connection with the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, but the twist came hours later when the man, known only as Carlos, was released.
And Carlos claims he had never heard of the missing 84-year-old mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie.
When the media caught up with Carlos after his release he said, "They didn't even tell me what's going on until the detectives got here. They told me I was being detained for kidnapping."
Carlos's mother's home was searched by police, with his mother stating he had nothing to do with Guthrie's disappearance and did not possess items -- like the backpack -- seen in the footage. Police allegedly raided the house based on a tip that Guthrie was in the house where he's staying.
The detainment seemed like the first big break after FBI recovered and released footage of a masked and armed man tampering with Nancy Guthrie's doorbell camera, offering a $50,000 reward for information to aid the investigation. See the photos below.
Josefina, the mother-in-law of Carlos a man detained for questioning regarding Guthrie, exclusively told NewsNation he was innocent, hours before he was released by police.
She said her son-in-law was inside her home in Rio Rico, Arizona, during the timeframe when Guthrie disappeared. He, his wife and their kids are staying with family as they experience financial difficulties, she explained.
“My daughter and he, and the kids, my grandkids, were doing DoorDash when they got stopped here,” Josefina told NewsNation.
“They already asked us a lot of questions about him. Like I said, I have nothing to hide. You can go in my house. You can search anything you want. There’s nothing to hide. I don’t know the lady, I don’t know about the lady. I saw her (missing) on Facebook,” she added.
“On the weekends, he stays at my house. He doesn’t go nowhere,” she said.
When asked if he could have left in the night, Josefina replied, “Oh, no, no,” adding that his van is currently broken.
