Texas launched its own border strategy during the Biden Administration, and now President Donald Trump has picked the leader of that project to run the Border Patrol.

Mike Banks is a retired Border Patrol agent and led the work positioning state troopers and the Texas National Guard along the Rio Grande. Senator John Cornyn says Banks' move to lead the Border Patrol will give federal agents more support.

Cornyn says Banks will understand what agents need to do their job.
Illegal crossings reached a record high in December of 2023 with more than 300,000 encounters, but the Biden administration says asylum limits last year led to a 76% drop to the fewest encounters since the first Trump administration.
