For years, glasses were seen as the go-to accessory for nerd culture among young people and a sometimes painful sign of aging for the over 40 crowd.
"Waiter, could you hold the menu a little farther away from me? How about across the room?"
Those days could be over as the FDA recently approved a new eye drop that could replace reading glasses for millions.
There are 128 million Americans who use reading glasses on a regular basis, but that number may soon shrinks significantly. Vuity is a new eye drop that promises to provide sharper vision for six to 10 hours.
The eye drops were recently approved by the FDA and hit the market for the first time this week.
“It's definitely a life change,” said Toni Wright, one of the 750 participants in a clinical trial to test the drug. According to CBS News, Vuity is the first FDA-approved eye drop to treat age-related blurry near vision. Thanks to these new eye drops, aging just got a little easier.
So, what's the catch? A 30-day supply of the drug will cost about $80 and works best in people 40 to 55 years old, a Vuity spokesperson said. Side effects detected in the three-month trial included headaches and red eyes, the company said.
"This is something that we anticipate will be well tolerated long term, but this will be evaluated and studied in a formal capacity," Waring said.
