(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Lake County state’s attorney is now reviewing a recording of a prank phone call recently made by the man accused of killing seven people at the Highland Park July 4th parade.

“Very strange” is how Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Chris Covelli describes the brief phone call.

It was made to a New York Post reporter about 7 p.m. New Year’s Eve by Robert Crimo III from the Lake County Jail, he said.

“They briefly exchange hellos, and then you can hear Crimo asking the reporter if his refrigerator is running. The reporter says, ‘Yeah, why?’

“Crimo then says, ‘Well, you better go catch it.’  The two of them laugh and then Crimo hangs up the phone.”

Covelli said the Lake County state’s attorney is reviewing the recording. He said it’s unlikely any charges would come from this, but Covelli says it will definitely be added to the state’s attorney’s case file on Crimo.

Crimo is being held in a cellblock that is for high-risk inmates, Covelli said.
