Rail bridges at Rio Grande shut down due to 'concerning development'

Customs and Border Protection has shut down two international rail bridges along the Rio Grande because of an increase in migrants hopping on freight trains to reach the border.

"CBP is continuing to surge all available resources to safely process migrants in response to increased levels of migrant encounters at the Southwest Border, fueled by smugglers peddling disinformation to prey on vulnerable individuals," the agency wrote in a statement.

CBP has shut down railroad bridges in Eagle Pass and El Paso at 8 a.m. Monday. The agency says it is shifting that manpower to work with the Border Patrol to focus on taking migrants into custody.

CBP has not said how long the bridges might stay closed describing this as an "evolving situation." An international bridge for cars is also closed in Eagle Pass along with ports of entry in Lukeville, AZ and San Diego, CA.

"We continue to adjust our operational plans to maximize enforcement efforts against those noncitizens who do not use lawful pathways or processes such as CBP One™ and those without a legal basis to remain in the United States," the agency writes.

People can check the status and wait times at ports of entry here.
