The 110,000 residents of Terrebonne Parish are currently without a hospital after both of their available medical facilities suffered extensive damage in Hurricane Ida, according to the Houma Courier.
Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center and Terrebonne General Health System both had to evacuate their entire patient population to other facilities. Their Facebook pages announced both were closed as a result of “devastating damages.”
Chabert Medical sent its patients to other Ochsner Health facilities. Terrebonne General did not make it known where it sent its patients.
“Our hospitals are out of commission,” Terrebonne Emergency Preparedness Director Earl Eues told Houma Today. “If you have a heart attack or cut your arm while chain-sawing or fall of a roof, we have very limited medical services for you. We only have one emergency room at Chabert, where they just treat you and ship you. You’ll be shipped off if you need a hospital stay.
Three other hospitals in the area – Lafourche Parish, Ochsner St. Anne, and Lady of the Sea – evacuated their patients as well, according to Houma Today.
Thibodaux Regional Medical Center is currently the only functioning medical facility serving either the Lafourche or Terrebonne Parish populations.
