Tinder, the popular online dating platform, will soon let singles do a background check on their matches.

Tinder’s parent company, Match Groups, is launching the new feature in hopes of making online dating safer.

The dating company is partnering with background check nonprofit Garbo, which will allow Tinder users to vet prospective dates prior to meeting, reported Good Morning America.

“Having newer technology helps singles feel more safe,” Julie Spira, founder of the website Cyber-Dating Expert, told the outlet. “Whether it’s the video dating or a background check, [it] makes the dating process flow quickly and safely.”

Through this new in-app feature, users will be able to see public records of potential matches. This includes orders of protection or restraining orders, convictions, and legal documents that report violent crimes, harassment, or abuse. The checks will not include drug possesion charges.

According to Pew Research, 3 in 10 people say someone continued to contact them on a dating site after they said they were not interested.

Users who were interviewed about the platform say that they are relieved that this is happening.

“I think that having that sense of peace of mind -- it makes it a lot easier to be willing to go on a first date,” Tinder user Savannah O’Donnell said.

“You get to see all the red flags before,” added Jack Sullivan, who also uses the app.

The feature is expected to launch later this year and will come at an additional cost.
