Uber announced this week during the GO-GET 2024 event that it is partnering with wholesale retailer Costco to provide groceries at customers’ doors.
“Stock up on all of your Costco favorites with just a few quick taps, and celebrate together,” said company CEO Dara Khosrowshahi in Tuesday a blog post.
To shop at Costco, consumers have to pay for a membership. According to Audacy station KCBS Radio in San Francisco, Uber Director of Grocery and Retail Partnerships Beryl Sanders said that members will save an additional 20% on every order through the Uber Eats partnership.
While it is an exciting announcement for fans of food delivery and wholesale prices, CBS tech correspondent Ian Sherr said it might be a risky move for Uber, profit-wise.
“We’ve seen many other companies try to partner with people like Costco, or trying to offer essentially a replacement for bus service shuttles for companies, and it’s never been a particularly profitable business,” he said, per KCBS Radio.
Reporter Nikki Modero from the station said that people can expect the new offerings from UberEats this summer. Earlier this month, Uber also announced a partnership with Instacart to bring restaurant delivery to users of the grocery delivery app.
“In the coming weeks, Instacart customers nationwide will be able to use the Instacart app to order from hundreds of thousands of restaurants, powered by Uber Eats,” said a May 7 announcement from the company.
