
A woman gave birth over the weekend to a baby boy while she was over the Atlantic during a United Airlines flight from Ghana to the United States.
United Airlines Flight 997 departed from Kotoka International Airport in Accra, the capital of Ghana, and was bound for Washington Dulles International Airport on an 11-hour trip, when the woman went into labor after about six hours in the air.
According to CNN, a physician, a nurse and a United flight attendant who is a former nurse were onboard the Boeing 787-8 and were able to help out the woman give birth.
"Our crew was amazing," United wrote in a statement. "They acted quickly, assisted the medical professionals onboard and ensured everyone stayed safe throughout the flight.
"And we were especially thrilled to see the plane land with one extra, especially beautiful, customer onboard."
Journalist Nancy Adobea Anane was on the flight and posted an update on Facebook with a video of the mother and her newborn baby.
"The baby Who was due late February decided to arrive 34,000 ft above (sea) level," Anane said in the post.
According to the Anane, the baby the baby was delivered early Sunday morning at around 3:40 a.m. ET, and the flight landed at around 5:40 a.m. ET.
She said that paramedics were waiting for the mother and child upon their landing at Dulles and both received medical care.
