It's a wet, cold, icy, smoky mess at a North Dallas apartment complex where a three-alarm fire broke out last night.
Just past 10 p.m. the first 911 calls came in, sending Dallas fire crews to the Allure Apartments, a multi-building complex near the Dallas North Tollway and the George Bush Turnpike.
It already looked bad when the first firefighters pulled up and commanders called a second alarm less than an hour later and a third about 45 minutes after that.
Officials said the fire got into the ceilings and the walls making it literally necessary for firefighters to use their axes to get at the flames.
It's especially challenging fighting fires in near zero temperatures because the run-off from all the water the firefighters pour on only freezes on the ground, making for dangerously slippery footing.
A number of people were chased from their homes into the bitterly cold night but it's not clear how many.
