Could we be one step closer to allowing casinos to be built in the Lone Star State?
Bills to legalize destination casinos, mobile sports betting have advanced in the Texas House, after coming up just a few votes short to make the November ballot.
Both amendments drew bipartisan support.
The first, from Rep. Charlie Geren (R-Fort Worth) would let voters decide if they want eight destination casinos in Texas, two of which would be built in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The second, from Rep. Jeff Leach (R-Plano) would trigger a vote on mobile sports betting.
Leach’s resolution would only allow mobile sports betting however, and would prohibit brick and mortar sportsbooks.
Pro sports teams would partner with a mobile sportsbook, such as DraftKings or FanDuel, to offer sports betting in Texas.
According to the Dallas Morning News, critics have these amendments have concerns that this could potentially “lead to more addiction, sinking some Texans further into debt and harming Native American tribes.”
A recent poll though, found that more than half of residents support resort-style casinos and legalized sports betting.
