Democrat Jasmine Crockett will become just the second person ever to represent Texas' 30th Congressional District, as she defeated Republican James Rodgers in the race to replace the retiring Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Dallas).
Johnson was elected to the seat when it was created in 1993 and served ever since. She announced she would retired at the end of her current term.
Crockett defeated Jane Hamilton in a primary runoff in May, while Rodgers bested James Harris in the Republican primary runoff.
Crockett, an attorney, was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2020. Rodgers is a recruiter for "an international Christian nonprofit," according to his campaign website.
Johnson was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1972, appointed as a regional director for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, and elected to the Texas Senate in 1986.
The 30th District includes a large part of Dallas, including most of downtown, Fair Park, Oak Lawn, Love Field and Deep Ellum. It also inclues the entirety of DeSoto, Lancaster, Wilmer, Hutchins, and Balch Springs. Parts of Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Glenn Heights, Ferris, and Ovilla also fall within the district.
