The Dallas city council is expected to vote on a $2 billion plan to demolish and replace the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in downtown Dallas.

Supporters of the plan for a new convention center claim the existing building is obsolete compared with convention centers in other cities, and they insist that's hurting business in Dallas. They are calling for the convention center to be torn down and a brand new one put up.

Critics of the new plan say declining convention business may not justify the large investment and too little input has come from Dallas residents outside the tourism industry, according to NBCDFW.

Dallas City Council Member Omar Narvaez is Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee that reviews options for the building.

"It's falling apart. That's the worst place for this thing and it's time to replace the convention center. And I think the Council has looked at every angle that we possibly can," Narvaez said. "We're a top 10 city in the country and our convention center is now not up to par with smaller size cities."
