Austin (1080 KRLD) - Governor Abbott broke out his veto pen to block multiple bills that were approved by state lawmakers this spring. For most of those bills, the Governor called them "legislative over-reach" saying the state government does not need to be involved in those issues.
Governor Abbott vetoed Senate Bill 474, known as the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act, which would have prevented dog owners from using a chain to restrain them or keeping them on a tether less than ten feet long. He says state laws already prohibit animal cruelty and the new bill would have been "micro-managing".
The Governor also vetoed Senate Bill 36 which would have created a higher education task force focused on hazing, saying the state does not need yet another task force.
