Hollywood celebs pumping big bucks into NYC mayor's race

In New York City, the race to succeed term-limited Mayor Bill DeBlasio is wide open, and Hollywood could play a major role in writing the ending to this real-life political drama.

As reported by Bloomberg, the various mayoral candidates have received more than $28 million in private campaign donations.  Roughly a third of that has come from heavy hitters in the entertainment industry, including Steven Spielberg, Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson.  All four celebrities are supporting different candidates in the race.

New York's next mayor will be tasked with rejuvenating a local film and television production industry devastated by the pandemic.  Experts say that may explain the surge in interest from the opposite coast.
