ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - The Texas Ethics Commission has fined Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams $1,500 for a series of campaign finance violations during his successful re-election bid last year.
In one instance, according to the agreed resolution, Williams accepted a $300 donation from Red Roof Inn, thinking that the donor was making the contribution on his own behalf and not on his company's behalf.
The Texas Election Code prohibits candidates from accepting donations from corporations.
In another instance, Williams accepted $500 from a single donor, when the limit for such a donation is $100.
Campaign spokesman Brian Mayes says the mayor acknowledges that there were a few oversights made on the campaign finance report.
"The mayor has a long history of honest finance reports (and) of playing by the book," says Mayes. "It's unfortunate that a couple of errors were made."
Mayes says the mayor takes full responsibility for the oversight.
"We have since made the appropriate procedural revisions," says Mayes, "and we've provided training to volunteers on correct measures for accepting campaign contributions."
