You can expect to see more eyes on you at polling places when voting in the upcoming mid-term elections as a new state law gives enhanced powers to partisan poll watchers.
Texas election reforms passed in 2021 include allowing partisan poll watchers closer access to voters and election workers.
The Republican Party of Texas has made this a priority. State Republican Party Chairman Matt Rinaldi says they’ll have about 12,000 of them in time for early voting on Monday.
Texas Democrats have developed their own game plan. Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa calls this a GOP attempt to subvert the democratic process. Hinojosa adds that they’ve recruited lawyers to make sure the GOP poll watchers don’t break the law.
Poll watchers now need a Certificate of Completion from the Texas Secretary of State’s office.
Early voting for the mid-term election begins on Monday October 24th.
